The holiday season is officially here and with the passing of Thanksgiving the next holiday we all are preparing for is Christmas, and what a huge holiday it is! Many of us have family gatherings and parties for the holiday season and we all want our homes to look their best for our guests. One of the most used rooms is the kitchen and it’s time to show your countertops some love. Here are some simple tips to make your countertops shine this holiday season.
Granite and Marble
Once your granite and marble countertops have been installed they have a natural shine to them from the polishing that they receive. After a while, beverages and foods can dull the shine, and if you don’t seal the countertops these can leak in and cause stains. Your first step is to make sure that your countertops are sealed and replace it once a year. To get them shiny, you can use a steam cleaner. Alternatively, if you don’t have one you can use a pH balanced dishwashing soap mixed in with a quart of water to clean them. To make them shine, add ¼ cup of isopropyl alcohol to your mixture.
Polyester and Acrylics
Countertops with a solid surface, like those make of polyester and acrylics, don’t usually require much to keep them shiny. If they do begin to look cloudy and not so clear, it’s quite easy to make them sparkle once again. You can use any cleaner for surfaces that are ammonia-based, or you can use mild dish soap mixed in with water. Stay away from cleaners that contain residues that can cloud the surface even more.
Many people choose laminate because it’s budget-friendly, however it doesn’t hold up as well as other materials. To clean them, use a mild dish soap mixed in a bowl of warm water. Make sure to use a clean cloth when wiping it down, and then a different clean cloth to dry it off. Keep water from pooling on the surface or getting in the seams, this can cause the material to swell up. Also, don’t use cleaners that contain residues because it can leave a streaky surface.
